Double-Secret Project (... double-secret??)

Brian, Matthias,

Here's my suggestion for the piece we've been discussing. It uses 4 of the 15L beams and 4 of the longer black connectors (showing one as an example). Very sturdy. Doesn't bend. Good reach.

What does double secret mean?

It's a variation of an old joke - there's a movie called "Animal House" and in the movie the fraternity keeps getting in trouble. The dean puts the fraternity on "Double-Secret Probation" - there's really no such thing, but it was a funny line from the movie that I chose to steal.

Jim,

as far as I remember (well, it has been some years ago and I tend to forget these things), the you-know-what-I'm-talking-about gizmo is meant to bend (at least up to a certain degree).

Supposing that this design of your's is just the thing-whose-name-is-not-to-be-pronounced, the complete hush-hush-device will be pretty large, won't it?

Either you're designing a Cthulu or you're just playing with us!

Well, "doesn't bend" is a subjective term... it does flex a little... not much. Build one and let me know what you think... the design isn't locked in... just a starting point.

I don't think the final device will necessarily be that large... but the reason for this design was to take into consideration that different devices might have different "footprints" or profiles... you have to have something that has a long reach...

Do you or Brian have a design to test? Remember, this is just to get the ball rolling... I'm sure the final 'thingy' probably won't look a thing like our early prototype.

Jim,

I'll dig into this once I've finished my present long-term NXT project (The Slug) which finally made it to Release Candidate state yesterday evening - just one or two photos and a little movie to go for.

Immediately afterwards I'll start designing the ultimate you-know-what - by the way, the "point of fixture" for these devices have not been in the midth, but rather near to one of the ends (the thicker one, that is).

So... why all the teasing? Seriously?

Please let us in on the design goals of this project you've got cooking.

This site has been very open about letting future NXT fans experience the new NXT kit without having one in hand yet.

If this project is NDA/MDP protected, that's fine. Otherwise, the cloak and dagger stuff is kind of off putting.

Bryon,

My apologies for starting this crazy little thing... we're certainly not wanting to upset you or anyone else. We are tossing around an idea that is not ready for prime-time, but is very very close... both Matthias and myself have a couple of projects we're trying to finish up before the week ends and I'm sure Brian's real job is cutting into his LEGO time.

We should have some sort of concept to present soon - we need to iron out some details before we post it.

Project don't need to be ready for prime time to be interesting.

Working through initial requirements of a 'bot and knowing the problem you are trying to solve can be very interesting as well.
