Another thing to do with the blue ball

Mates,

Inspired by some researches of two MDPs in the NXT military sector and pushed by the "Throw it" challenge on NXTasy.org, I've gone in some works for a Blue Ball Gun.

These efforts finally resulted in a NXT robot called "Dicke Bertha" - feel free to have a look.

Feedback is highly welcome (as usually).

Cheers,
Matthias Paul (fond of reminiscent names)

Looks very professional and military. I like the way it tilts up before firing. Is it interacting with Goliath in some way or is it timed?

Matthias,

I love it! I like the way you propel the fireing mechanism...worm gears used as gear racks is new to me. I think that this would be a great aplication for bluetooth. It may beposible for the device to find enemy's (other NXT bricks) using bluetooth.

You do get the 2nd place at this stage, since I got only one contribution so far (which reached 122 inches..). Wake up NXT fans!

The Goliath target robot sends a bluetooth signal once it has unfolded the target device add-on (which the gun reacts on).

Well, just if the possible target sends a bluetooth "here am I" signal; and even then the gun could not figure out WHERE the target actually is located, I think.
A possible extension for the gun could be to have a rotating ultrasonic sensor (which would turn it into some sort of RADAR-guided gun) - that would require a fourth motor, hence a second NXT, though.

Great!!
So I'm going to send it in by any means. I've created two additional videos to this end to illustrate the firing range (which turned out to be app. 90 cm, not just 60 as I had estimated beforehand) - one is linked on the page.

Thanks for all the encouraging feedback.

Jim,

I really hoped you would say so :-)

Gearing is my weakness, in that I never use its power enough... I'm familiar enough with the concepts, just not actual implementation.

If you could figure a way to add a "clutch" of sorts, that engages a spinning motor for a short, sudden burst of power, you might get some more distance, but building a clutch is probably not as easy as it sounds...

I guess the challenge here is to find the optimal balance between the pressure of the clutch and the ability of the motor of the bolt to overcome the clutch's resistance.

Once I'm using a second brick I might add a fourth motor to the gun that could work on the other side of the worm gear to enhance power.
Yet, two bricks for one robot will noticeably increase the coordination complexity.

Why does it rotate?

I was under the impresion that the competition was one NXT set only...are you talking about an anuoficial entry?

For the challenge, I'd stay with one brick and re-use the rotation motors (thus refraining from rotating the gun).

But the gun itself should have more features in the end - a gun not being able to rotate isn't a real gun, is it?

watch out guy ziv... there is a new sherrif in town :P

i dont have yet the NXT set but the idea is already on the paper

Agreed. I think the next thing you should add is an ammo pack. Somehthing similar to the devices that hold the Zamor shears, but these would hold the balls. Then you could have multible shots. I'm guessing you have around four balls...
