BOOK: "The Mayan Adventure" chapter excerpts

UPDATE: Not long after I posted this, I received an email telling me that MAKE magazine has posted a little blurb about my book - but the best part is that they've included a PDF download that includes ALL of chapter 1 and chapter 2, not just an excerpt. Read it here.

I've received requests for chapter excerpts for my book "LEGO Mindstorms NXT: The Mayan Adventure" and I'm happy to comply.

Below are links to numerous items, including the Design Journal Page that is used in the theory chapters (chapters 2, 6, 10, 14, and 18) to help develop the 5 robots included with the book (and useful for helping design your own robots).

The Design Journal Page is all yours - make as many copies as you like. The PDF file contains 6 blanks for you to print out and I hope you find it useful. If you're not sure how the Design Journal Page works, be sure to check out the Chapter 2 excerpt below - each section of the Design Journal page is covered in detail in those theory chapters (mentioned above) and by the time the reader has completed all 5 robots, the Design Journal Page will be very familiar territory.

There's great stuff here, Jim.

I hope that what you generously give to the NXT community will come back to you in the form of increased sales (so you can do another book)!

Very nice!
Is the book itself black and white too?

It says that they shouldn't publish the book unless they have a written permission from the author, yet you were informed only after it was published. Is it legal? I guess it is, since you approve.

If you just give it away why give you money ?
Technically, you're giving the publisher money and they occasionally throw a few pennies my way :)

At 300 pages, I'm okay with giving out 20-30 pages for free to let people see what the book looks like...

Thanks SO MUCH for your comment.

Hey anonymous look up the word excerpt in a dictionary.

Jim,

dsad to say, the files behind your excerpts links do no longer exist (404 error). :-(

Have they been removed by purpose?
I've contacted Apress and they tell me they're having some server problems... and that the files will most likely be moved to a new location.

As soon as I get word, I'll fix all the links.

It does go against the grain for a "review" to include two full chapters of a book. In my understanding, doing such in the USA without the publisher's permission is a violation of copyright law.

Anyway, I am glad others are enjoying your book. :)
The publisher (Apress) is the one who made the 2 full chapters available (ch1 and ch2). They did it at the author's request (me).

Ch3 and 4 are excerpts only.

Somebody named D Raines posted a negative review of yor book Jim. Just thought you want to know. I love the book so I don't understand the review. I think he is wrong. OR she.

Amy
Yes, I saw it and responded. (My wife watches my reviews and lets me know when someone posts a review... isn't that nice of her? She's very protective!)

Unfortunately, I can't do anything about the review... D. Raines is allowed his/her own opinion. It's unfortunate that someone can write a quick review of a sentence or two and provide a negative review without being forced to provide details or specific areas of the book that they're talking about... this one was vague.

Because of the vagueness of the review, I'm not concerned about the (poorly written) 1-star review...

Thanks for letting me know about the review, though... I appreciate readers comments.

Jim,
My wife recently purchased your book to help out our home school club. Great work! Thanks for your contributions.
Just wanted to bring something to your attention - I could not find the designjournal.pdf on the apress web site. You may want to verify it is still available through the site since the book refers to it.

Mike,

Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you like the book!

I've created a link along the right side of the blog for the Mayan book's support files. The Design Journal Page is there, as well, so download and print as many copies as you need :)
