"Gecko" Robot Walks on Walls on Ceilings

Carnegie Mellon has invented a robot that walks on walls and ceilings. These pictures of it performing are from a video that's here.

If anyone has the old RIS software CD, you can find a video of the "Window Walker" within a resource folder. Everything was LEGO except the suction cup feet.

That's RIS as in Robotics Invention System (RCX era)...for those that may be thinking of something else.

The video looked a little bit like it was sped up...anybody else notice that?

(and if it is true...why would it matter? hmmm)

Chris,

Yeah, they had a clip of the Window Walker in the "tour" on the software - it looked pretty neat.

Maniac,

Really? It looked like normal speed to me.

I think Maniac of Mayhem is right. The video of the CMU Gecko robot looks a bit strange. The camera is handheld and moves too jerky to be normal speed.

My guess is that the robot's feet need to loosen the sticky before it takes the next "step". This process showing the action may take more time than the filmers felt could fit within a short snibbit of video.

Video speed, to me, looks normal. I think the shake is simply from the person's subtle hand movements from taking the video

Now that I look at it again, I guess it's possible that it's been sped up, but I don't think it is - the description says it can move 6 cm per second, which seems like the speed it's going at in the video.

I think you guys are right. My PC may have been to blame (choppy?). It looked very different the second time around and slower.

I thought the robot movement looked like it could be realistic...but once it gets on the ceiling the tether just starts flying around very quickly...but that might be the quality of the video or my computer.

Yeah it does jerk around a bunch, but I think that's because of the tail moving around - the tail presses hard against the wall while the gecko moves to help it.
