LAUNCH!

For those of you who have been following Chris Anderson (WIRED magazine and Geekdad blog) and his attempt to create a remotely controlled airplane using NXT technology... well...

...check it out.

Congratulations, Chris...

And for more information, Chris has created a dedicated site for this project called DIY Drones and can be found here.

My favorite quote of Chris': "If children can make UAVs out of toys, the genie is out of the bottle."

Aw - I was expecting to see something made from 100% LEGO. Where was lego used? I don't assume to power the propeller :(

Josh,

If you click through to the original story, you'll see that Mindstorms NXT controls the rudder using the compass sensor. The rest of the plane is autostabalized using a commercial infrared unit. The next version will use GPS rather than the compass sensor.

Can you imagine a lego wing? You should add some pieces to the outside just to say "I use LEGO and I'm proud!" What batteries do you use?

I have heard of a project in Switzerland where they are trying to make a lego airplane or helicopter completely out of lego.

Integrating MindStorms into non-LEGO things are a majorly fun aspect of these technologies.

Who wants to help build my NXT lawn mower? The grass is getting taller.

Chris
