Sample Page from Idea Book - ScanBot

On the left is a section of the building instructions for ScanBot, the robot I contributed to the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Idea Book.

As you might deduce from the name, ScanBot scans black-and-white images, and you can build and program it completely from the contents of one Retail NXT base set #8527 (along with a computer that can run NXT-G, of course).

I like the lay out of the pages. Do all the robot plans look like these?
Anonymous,

Yup... the format is the same for all the robot chapters.

okay so does your book come with all of the plans and programs to build the robots? I bought the building robots with NXT book but it doesn't have the plans and I'm not happy about that.

your book is called the idea book so is it just full of ideas or does it come with plans?????
Anonymous,

I understand your concern - you sound like you want to build some robots!!

Well, I've got good news. Yes... that is Y-E-S, our book comes with complete plans to build ALL the robots. I believe that all of our robots also come with complete programming instructions EXCEPT for 1 that I believe gives you enough to program it yourself BECAUSE it is supposed to be customizable. I'll let the contributor of that robot maybe chime in...

But like I said - all of the robots come with complete building instructions, just like you see in the sample pages we've posted today and in the past few weeks.

I hope you like our book - we put a LOT of time into it and we hope we've provided an interesting assortment of robots that will give you plenty of time to play and experiment.

so when you say scan bot do you mean that it scans a black and white image then it puts it on your computer?and if so could i add a hitechnic color sensor so i would get a color image?. and is it progammed in NXT-G?
Anonymous,

Actually, ScanBot displays the image right on the NXT screen! Of course, the NXT screen can only display black-and-white images, so you couldn't use the color sensor with the program in the book. However, you could write your own program for using ScanBot with the color sensor to display a color scan on the PC, if you knew how to do it. And yes, the instructions in the book tell you how to make an NXT-G program for the robot - you don't need to know any other language. :-)

Quick change of subject. Does anyone know when the new (working) leJOS NXJ comes out? Thanks!
Thanks Jim, my robot does come with programming that explore some of the infinite possibilities one can create with my robot. I have included 5 programs that will demo basic techniques, complex theory, and present space for interesting user interaction. Readers will have fun exploring their own creative talents with one retail NXT kit.
