NXT-G 1.1

Reader Lee M. emailed me to let me know that NXT-G 1.1 is now listed on the LEGO Ed website.

It's listed at US$19.99 and states "available the week of August 27th" with product ID W900093.

They listed it there for over a month, and yes, thats WITH the release date.

Thanks, Andy... but this is the first time I've been emailed about it. I do try to check sites for stuff, but this one slipped through my radar.

I got a notice from LEGO Education already - my copy shipped on 8/20 and is supposed to arrive today (probably in the next hour).

When some of you readers get it, I'd love to hear what you discover is different. I helped with the beta, and to be honest I'm not even sure at this point... mostly because I've done some many "interesting" hacks to my copies over the months :-).

I ordered it yesterday and they confirmed shipping already, so it looks like it's available. I'll let you know when it arrives.

Jim, I understand how things like that can "slip" through your rader, after all, you are the chif contributor for the worlds best blog ever! It really must be hard with a family and work too. ;-) And thanks to you other guys too, I will certanly order a copy as soon as I get money cause I need it for FLL this year, I'm not experienced enough in RoboLab 2.9, and NXT-G 1.0 is to slow for me, and I don't like that it crashes so oftenfor me either.

Question, is this an upgrade only or a full release of the new version? My son lost his CD and I have been trying to find it for months. Replacement at $40+ is upsetting! Either way I need to get it but $20 would be nice for the new version only.

Brian Davis you say that you hack your version of NXT-g 1.1 would you please exsplain more about hacking it and help us do that do of if its worth it and what kinds of hacks you have done.

You can install the new 1.1 version without the original installed, but you still need to have the NXT drivers/connection software already installed.

the driver software is also on the cd in the nxt_driver directory

On "hacking" 1.1...

I guess that was poor terminology. As one of the beta testers, I've ended up installing version after version, and sometimes installing temporary patches until the next beta version comes out, etc. And all this on a machine that was also used for testing the very first versions of NXT-G as well, and with some custom VI's that others have developed over the past couple of years thrown in, etc. (like "Remove Broken Wires", a wonderful little tool).

In short, while I've tried repeatedly to make sure my "clean install" were truely "clean", in some cases I already know they weren't, and I'm curious what's in the released version of 1.1.

As to "useful hacks", well... adding menu items/option in the Tools menu (by dropping carefully scripting VIs into the /engine/projects/ directory), adding 3rd party blocks (both from folks like Hitechnic and individuals like Guy Ziv or Steve Hassenplug), or even just taking out or changing icons, images, or sounds from various places to "see what happens". There's a lot of untapped hacking in the wonderful open folder structure of the NXT-G /engine/ directory...

Tim, are you saying all that I will need is the new NXT-G 1.1 CD? Thanks.

Am I correct in assuming the software upgrade is for both the education kit and retail kit of the LEGO MINDSTORMs robot kit?

thanks!
Tim said…
Yes, what I was trying to say (and not very well) was that you only need the one CD.

If this is education, than can i use it with my retail version, or is there going to be a retail release?

I called LEGO Education and asked if this upgrade worked on the retail kit. They weren't certain but felt that it would not and that perhaps retail division had it's own upgrade planned. They then sent me to LEGO Retail division. I spoke w/ someone in software issues. He said that he supports 1.1 and since he is at LEGO REtail, the upgrade must work on the retail kit. Sort of a round about way to say that yes the NXT-G 1.1 works on the retail kit. If someone finds out something different, please post.

To TheBuilder94 - my question was answered in the other NXT-G 1.1 upgrade thread above this one.

Given that 1.1 installs on its own even when 1.0 is not present, I don't think it matters which version you get. See the new discussion on 1.1.
