Bulldozer Sumo

On the 3rd of November, a number of the MCP got together over at Steve Hassenplug's house for a little bit of a contest. Bryan Bonahoom, John Brost, Jay Kinzie, Steve Hassenplug, and myself all brought autonomous LEGO bulldozers. Take a stock #8275 Bulldozer, and have an NXT drive it using a Hitechnic IRLink. Equip it with edge detectors, US sensors to locate opponents, and perhaps a few special custom weapons, and let the LEGO pieces fall where they may. A good time was had by all, and Bulldozer sumo was a resounding success.. even if all of the matches didn't go exactly according to plan. Take a look at the highlights here on YouTube:

GREAT, too bad none of you had the NXT motors build in, you would gain more speed, less power, but more control, since you can them proportional control the threads.

PS I specially liked the part of Bryans Bulldozer attacking Steves foot :)

For Bulldozer sumo, I don't know if direct-driving the treads with the NXT motors would have helped - the treads slide so much, there's very little accuracy left to preserve. It would have made the system slightly more responsive however (there is some delay for the NXT to detect that the light sensor has changed its reading, then tell the IRLink to reverse the PF motors, then the IRLink has to actually send that message, and finally the PF receiver decodes that message, and finally commands the motors to a new state).

And yes, I like the bulldozer attacking Steve's foot too. Actually, that was just the only attack captured on video that day - any sumobot with active opponent detection had a tendency to end up looking like something out of "Terminator", on a search and destroy mission.

It says the video is no longer available when I try to play it. I hope that is temporary?
